Everything Must Change

Sunset Wittenbergen
“There are not many things
In life you can be sure of.
Except

Rain comes from the clouds,
And sun lights up the sky,
And humming birds do fly.

Winter turns to spring.
Wounded heart will heal.
Never much too soon
Everything must change…”
(Lyrics by George Benson)

Yesterday was the birthday of Nina Simone (1933-2003). Here to listen to her version of “Everything Must Change” (YouTube-Link)

Soul Years Nina Simone

“Oh sinnerman, where you gonna run to?”

Today in Soul Years it is all about one epic song, “Sinner Man.” “Sinner Man” or “Sinnerman” is originally a traditional spiritual song. The lyrics describe a sinner attempting to hide from divine justice on Judgement Day. The first modern recorded version came from the 1956 recording by Les Baxter – Sinner Man.

In 1959 the folk musicgroup The Weavers performed her version. I couldn´t find the original version. But here is a version from 1963 from The Weavers with Sinner Man. Now, let us come to the Nina Simone recording.

Nina Simone´s “Sinnerman” (spelled as one word) is one of  her most famous songs and she recorded her definitive 10-minute-plus version on her 1965 album Pastel Blues. In the early days of her career during the early sixties, when she was heavily involved in the Greenwich Village scene, Simone often used the long piece to end her live performances. Here is another version, taken 1976 at the Montreux Festival Live “Sinnerman.”

Simone’s version of Sinnerman has been sampled by among other things Timbaland for the song “Oh Timbaland”It has also been covered by 16 Horsepower, The Seekers, Blues Musician Eric BibbThere are still some reggae and ska versions by The Wailers featuring Peter Tosh.

Some facts about Nina Simone. She was born as Eunice Kathleen Waymon on February 21, 1933 – Died April 21, 2003, was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist. It is the first but not the last time that I will feature Nina Simone here. Because her life and career is so amazing.

Kurz einige Fakten über Nina Simon. Sie wurde als Eunice Kathleen Waymon am 21. Februar 1933 geboren und starb am 21. But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will”

Then we have British funk in the mix, Northern Soul, the German electronic band Kraftwerk and Blondie. New music from his 4th album by José James where he is walking on new paths in music and include rock elements in his songs. I really like artists who trying out new sounds and elements. The french musician and producer Nikitch is still in the mix. Then I selected Charles Aznavour with two songs for this mix. For Jazz Friends, Keith Jarret & Charlie Haden and Charles Mingus are in the mix. Finally taken from the vault, there are rare tracks from Baby Huey and Latin Jazz from Brazil from the artist Dum um Romao, Al Downing and one of my all time favorite song from Smokey Robinson is in the mix.
