Mix-up Selection in Soul

Soul on Friday with a special mix of Floor Fillers. Dancing Soul Music from the 50s, 60s and 70s. All songs having Groove, Passion, Power, Style and Grace. All Killer and no filler on the Dancefloor.

This is a Mix of Northern Soul, Modern Soul, Blues and R&B. Just a word about the maybe unknown artists. Soul Music is for DJ´s a kind of collection culture, I learnt. That´s why I am looking for soul treasures deep in the archives and not for the well known soul hits. If you like, drop me a line about your favourites in Classic Soul Music.

Stay tuned. Listen. Relax, Enjoy and keep in mind: Soul Music is still good on the dancefloor.

Soul Years Tainted Love

„Sometimes I feel I’ve got to
Run away, I’ve got to
Get away from the pain you drive into the heart of me…“

TAINTED LOVE was originally composed by the songwriter, producer and Four Prep member Ed Cobb in 1964 and recorded in the same year by Gloria Jones, a former background singer for Elvis Presley. In 1981, the English New Wave band Soft Cell – aka the two art students Marc Almond (vocals, percussion) and Dave Ball (synthesizer, percussion) – recorded a new version of the song with Mike Thorne and Paul Hardiman producing. „It was one of those dream sessions where everything worked“, Thorn recalls.

Gloria Jones is an American singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California. She was the girlfriend of glam rock artist Marc Bolan of the band T. Rex until his death in 1977. TAINTED LOVE was the in 1964 the b-side from the single „My Bad Boy´s Boy Comin‘ Home„, which was a commercial flop, failing to chart in either the US or the UK. Before Jones recorded the song, Cobb had offered it to The Standells, which he managed and produced, but they rejected it.

However, in 1973, a British club DJ purchased a copy of the old single while on a trip to the United States. The track’s Motown-influenced sound fit in perfectly with the music favoured by those involved in the UK’s Northern Soul club scene of the early 1970s, and the DJ popularised the song at the Northern Soul clubs.

The most remembered song that Jones penned was Gladys Knight and the Pips‘ „If I Were Your Woman„, which was nominated for a Grammy in 1971.

Den größten Erfolg als Songwriter hatte Gloria Jones mit dem Song „If I Were Yur Woman“, der 1971 für einen Grammy nominiert war.

Feeling Good

Welcome to a new Soul & Jazz Mix with the next common star FKA twigs, Soul Treasures from Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway and others more and some amazing cover versions. And you can watch to a wonderful Jazz movie trailer. Then you can listen to the debut album from Raury, which is big stuff.

FKA twigs aka Tahliah Barnett. She is a British singer. FKA stands for Formerly Known As. Her debut was released in August. She became known as twigs for the way her bones crack. Her style in music: she makes trip-hop for a new time. Then I am glad to share one of my all time favorite Jazz standards „The Stolen Moment“. Speedometer playing a jazzy version of „Happy“. We have Northern Soul in the mix and finally three soul giants: Donny Hathaway with his wonderful Live version of „The Ghetto, Marvin Gaye and King Curtis Live at the Filmore west. Then I found three treasures, deep in the cellar: Ananda Shankar with his „Dancing Drums“, one of my favorite track from Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra and the Brazilian Tamba Trio with „Desafinado“.

Listen, relax and enjoy!

By surprise I found the trailer for a Jazz Movie: „All Night Long“ with the recently passed actor and director Richard Attenborough together with Jazz Giants like Dave Brubeck and Charles Mingus. I have never heard about the film, but the trailer with the music is fantastic and makes me curious.

For the BBC, it was the album of the week: Raury with his album „Indigo Child“. He is still 18 years young and his sample style where he mixed Folk with Soul Elements to a unique sound is great.
